There’s something about vibrant, restless teenage youth that is highly energizing and extremely contagious. After watching High School Musical On Stage!, my companions and I left the Meralco Theater in boisterous cheer and laughter, as if we were in high school again, breaking free, getting our heads in the game, bopping to the top, and whatever other physical or emotional reactions the musical’s songs inadvertently struck in us. With a wholesome, entertaining plot dashed with memorable songs, an inspired direction from Audie Gemora, jaw-dropping choreography by Chinnie Nepomuceno, and startling performances from the cast led by teen heartthrob Sam Concepcion, STAGES and Trumpets Playshop’s production of Disney’s High School Musical (HSM), which runs weekends until July 15 at the Meralco Theater, proves to be the year’s must-see musical for the whole family. The movie has been called cheesy, silly, and ungainly, but no withering reviews by any hard-to-please critic apply to the stage version, at least not the one currently running at the Meralco Threater until July 15th. Mounted by STAGES and Trumpets Playshop, High School Musical On Stage is the kind of play that you will want to see over and over again–even on a single night. (more…)
